The Restoration of the Chapel of St. Agnes
“I place my trust in you. O adorable blood, our redemption, our regeneration. Fall, drop by drop, into the hearts that have wandered from you and soften their hardness.” – Agnes of Rome
Since its founding, the Chapel of St. Agnes has faithfully served the Bishop’s College community, opening its doors to welcome all who seek solace within its sacred walls. Consecrated on 21 January 1900 by Bishop R.S. Copleston, this revered space has quietly provided spiritual refuge for generations of students and teachers over the past 125 years.
Recognising the urgent need for restoration, and with the blessings of The Right Reverend Dushantha Rodrigo, Bishop of Colombo, and Principal Mrs. Chemali Goonetileke, Herath bravely undertook the comprehensive restoration of this sacred sanctuary. Despite being the smallest building in the school, the chapel holds great historical and architectural significance, having sheltered countless heartfelt hymns and profound messages of faith that have uplifted the spirits of all who have sought refuge within its walls. The restoration work was entrusted to Design & Cost Works Pvt Ltd.
The restoration began in September 2024, starting with the fundraiser “Made in 1875,” a high tea organised by the 1998 batch, along with the 150th anniversary executive committee, and, of course, the generous support of donors whose contributions were seen as blessings from above. We appreciate the ongoing support of donors who wish to contribute to this vital initiative. The project was completed on schedule to coincide with the school’s 150th Anniversary and the chapel’s 125th Anniversary. The restored chapel was rededicated on 21 January 2025, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.
All donations have been directly used to reduce the borrowed funds for the chapel restoration, thereby easing the financial obligation to the school. For those interested in contributing to this cause, please message Fadhiya on 077 6017592.
Every symbol and element of the chapel has been carefully restored to its former glory. Detailed information about each historical artefact and architectural feature can be found in our commemorative booklet -the first ever documented history of the Chapel of St. Agnes. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals who contributed to compiling this comprehensive history and reflection of our beloved chapel.
The booklet – “Prayers, Blessings and Miracles” is available for purchase at the school bookshop – BC Legacy Boutique and serves as both a historical record and a testament to the enduring faith that has sustained this sacred space for over a century.
