The Bishop’s College Tamil Literary and Drama Society was founded in 1983 by Mrs. Ratnes Eswarathas with the motive of creating a vast opportunity to exhibit talents, striving to create a leading student body by providing opportunities to acquire proficiency in the Tamil language and rich culture. It aims to foster an inspiration for language, enhance literary creativity and provide an avenue for Tamil Literature and Drama beyond the academic curriculum.

(Providing resources and opportunities for Tamil students to acquire proficiency in Tamil and its arts with a view to providing a platform for their non-academic skills)

Brief History –

The Tamil Literary and Drama Society of Bishop’s College, was initiated in order to develop language skills of students by manifesting and providing insight into the utmost significance of Tamil language. With a 40-year legacy, the society has successfully provided a wide range of opportunities for students to expand their knowledge by engaging in several competitions and activities, which has led to many achievements, throughout the past years.

What the society does –

Throughout the past decades, the Tamil Literary and Drama Society has been involved in multiple projects and events, encouraging students to become orators and display their intellectual, independent thinking skills and imbibe a sense of confidence, highlighting the significance of the language. By conducting literary and drama competitions in all forms including oratory, extempore, drama, essay and short story writing, we aspire to create a platform for our students to encourage their appreciation for the language and its arts. The Tamil Literary and Drama society strongly believes that the projects conducted in past, present and future will certainly enable students with opportunities to enhance their proficiency in Tamil language and skills.

  • Interhouse Tamil Literary and Drama Competitions
  • Navil
    A day full of games embracing Tamil culture and traditions by testing their knowledge in literature, drama, music and dance while developing friendships with other schools.
  • Script Writing Workshop
    This is a workshop to develop future scriptwriters to later be in the field of theater and cinema.
  • Arivuchamar
    An all-island quiz competition organized jointly by the Tamil Literary and Drama Society of Bishop’s College and the Tamil Literary Association of Royal College.

Tamil Debating Circle

Introduction (English) – With a vision of creating a future in which students can think past stereotypes; understand idiosyncratic and different ideas, and be heard by society, the Tamil Debating Circle engages students in critical thinking and develops educated, informed, and confident voices.

Introduction (Tamil) – மாணவர்களை பழைமைவாதச் சிந்தனைகளிலிருந்து விலக்கி; தனித்துவமான மற்றும் புதிய எண்ணக்கருக்களை புரிந்து கொள்ளவும் அதனை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவும் தயாரான சமூகத்தைக் கொண்டதுமான எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்கும் நோக்குடன், பிஷப்ஸ் கல்லூரியின் தமிழ் விவாத மன்றம், மாணவர்களின் விமர்சன ரீதியிலான சிந்தனைத் திறன்களை அபிவிருத்தி செய்வதனூடாக கல்வியறிவு கொண்ட, தன்னம்பிக்கையுள்ள ஆளுமைகளை உருவாக்குகின்றது.
