The New Principal of Bishop’s College, Mrs. Hemamali Bibile was inducted as our new principal on the 16th of June 2003.

Mrs. Hemamali Bibile was a student of CMS Ladies College Colombo 07, where she successfully completed her primary, secondary and advanced level studies. At the age of 20 she entered the English Teachers Training College and was appointed to St. Joseph’s Convent Kegalle, as a fully qualified English Teacher in 1974. She then moved on to Clifton Girls School Colombo where she served for nearly 11 years.

She was seconded to service at the Curriculum Development Centre, Colombo 07 as a Course Instructor and Syllabus Writer of English Text books and Teachers Guides. She won a Staff Development Award Scholarship offered by the British Council to the University of London for a one year diploma in Teaching English as a second language.

For 1988 to 1993 she has served as an English Teacher in the Ministry of Education Sultanate of Oman.

Having obtained a Bachelor of Education, English Medium, Specialising in Teaching English as a second language she was appointed an in-service teacher advisor to the Colombo district from 1994 to 2003.

Obtaining many achievements from 1971 to 2003 she has greatly contributed to the field of education.

Contribution to the Field of Education:

  • Coordinator of the English Support Centre for Colombo Schools
  • Supervisor of the Books in Schools Reading Project Western Province, Sri Lanka.
  • Member of the Examinations Committee for the Western Province Education Department.
  • Writing and Making, test papers for English Language and English Literature for the province.
  • Member of the material writing group of the National Institute of Education.
  • Chief Examiner for G.C.E.(Ordinary Level) English Literature Marking.
  • Organiser and resource person for seminars/ workshops/ English Days conducted by the Education Department.
  • Guest speaker at many school English Day programmers.

Welcoming new students - 2007

It was in deed a very happy day for Bishop’s College as we welcomed our new little Bishopians and their parents. We were blessed to meet new families and also to rekindle friendships with families and past pupils we have known.

We were happy to have Fr. Dushantha Rodrigo, our Chaplain here with us at this happy occasion to bless all the little children.

We enrolled 102 new students to the Nursery and 50 to Grade 1. We have 5 Nursery and 5 Grade 1 classes and 1 Educational Support Unit.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Programme of Events – Primary

The year 2007 was an eventful year for Primary.

Lent term – The first programme ‘Independence day celebrations’ was conducted on the 2nd of February on our college grounds based on the theme ‘National Heroes’.

            The reciprocal visit of the teachers form Manchester – U. K, being a link between Bishop’s College Primary and Shire Oak Primary School took place from the 5th of “February to 13th of February, attended by two U.K staff members.

            The annual kindergarten Activity day was held on the 29th of March. This years programme was carried out under the following themes – “Circus on Parade”, “ A touch of Disney land”, “ Lets remember our Nursery Rhymes”, Somewhere over the Rainbow” and finally a drill display given by the students of Grade 3. This occasion was graced my Mrs. Ramola Sivasunderam.

Sinhala and Tamil New year celebrations were held in school on the 4th of April. All customary traditions were followed as in the past.

                

Trinity Term – The Thanks giving service and celebration of 50 years service of Miss. Margaret Dias was held on the 25th of May at St. Michael and all Angels’ church attended by students, teachers and past pupils.

The cookery day was carried out from Grades 1 – 3 from the 7th of June to 12th   in their respective grades. The primary exhibition on ‘Creative Work’ was held on the 6th of July keeping with the environmental studies topics.

            The annual ‘K. G Raffle draw’ was held on the 27th of July to raise funds in aids of St. Margaret’s Convent.

           

Advent Term – The term commenced with ‘excursions’ organized for students of Grades 1 – 5, to celebrate the World Children’s Day’ during the 1st week of October. The students of grade 4 and 5 visited the Gannoruwa Agricultural Farm and Peradeniya gardens, while grade 3 students visited the Guruge Nature Park in Ja – Ela. The students of  lower grades 1 & 2 visited the Dehiwala zoologiacal gardens.

            The social studies exhibition was held on the 5th of October. The programme was carried out according to a theme chosen for each grade, namely Birds (Grade 1), Animals (Grade 2), Vegetation and Crops (Grade 3), Mountains and Rivers (Grade 4), Life around the Rivers (Grade 5).

            Social service day: The students of kindergarten will be entertaining the ‘Kadalana Pre – School children at Bishop’s College on 19th of October.

            A ‘Book Day’ for grade 1 students and a Fancy dress Parade for grade 2 students will be conducted this term early October and late November respectively. An art competition will be held on the 28th of November for grade 3 students.

            A concert where every child participates will be staged for our parents on two consecutive days followed by the Nativity Play on 22nd and 23rd of November. There will be a concert staged for parents of grades 4 and 5 on the 3rd of December.

            Finally the annual K. G Christmas Party will be held on the 5th of December concluding the years programme.

Prefects Induction – 2007

The induction of prefects for the year 2007 was held on the 5th of February 2007 at 8.00am in the Bishop’s College auditorium. The program began with the school hymn, next the head prefect Harshini Rodrigo and the deputy head prefect Thaksala Thissera took their oaths before the Principal and received their ties and badges. After that the newly appointed prefects Samanmali Herath, Janeesha Somaratne, Paatala Fernando, Sumali De Silva, Roshika Karunairanjan, Abilashini Manoharan, Shaleen Johar, Keshia Pendigrast, Aqeela Albar, Hafza Marzook, Rajindra Amarasuriya, Malika Yapa, Nilushi Nanhimiarachchi, Bhagya Wijewardena, Mihishani De Silva and Vyshnavee Ramachandran took their oaths.

            The traditional ceremony starting with lighting of the lamp by the former head prefect Agashi Amunugama followed by the Principal and by the newly appointed head prefect Harshini Rodrigo and thereafter passing the light to the rest of the guild.

            Nilushi Nanhimiarachchi was appointed as the Games Captain and Jashini Kumaranatunge the vice captain. Next the Principal addressed the gathering followed by the message from our Chaplain. The proceedings concluded with the school song.
